How We Judged the Aquascaping Tools
How this guide was built
built from manufacturer pages, the live Amazon listings, one maker’s own shop reviews and owner reports in aquarium forums; we have not tested these products ourselves.
The criteria, in order
- Safety in the tank: the material and each maker’s rust and care wording.
- Fit for the job and the plants: the task each maker names for its tool shape.
- Ease of planting: length and tips, where published.
- Ease of cleaning and storage: care lines, holders and bags.
- Value: price tier ($ to $$$, relative to these eight). All were in stock on 2026-11-04: five sold by Amazon.com, two by the brands’ own Amazon stores (hygger, NEPTONION) and one by a third-party seller with Amazon shipping (LANDEN).
What planted-tank owners say and sources and who sells what
What planted-tank owners say
In the top r/Aquascape thread on wasted money, one owner lists “Tweezers & scissors, for planting & trimming” as mandatory and puts “Rakes or other scaping supplies” and “Fancy versions of any of the above items (like “special” trimming scissors)” under “Meh, not necessary”. A reply: “I don’t know what you mean with special trimming scissors but curved scissors are actually very useful.”
On cheap kits, r/Aquascape owners split. One: “I got the kit on Amazon and it began to rust very quickly. Wouldn’t recommend, when it comes to the tools it’s best to pay the price.” (The kit is not named, and none of these owners names a pick here.) Another, of an $11 Amazon set that is also not a pick here: “No issues with any of the pieces and they are ~2 years old”.
Sources and who sells what
The hygger review below is from hygger’s own shop, so not independent. UNS also sells live tissue-culture plants; hygger’s shop has a freshwater-shrimp section. None of the picks is livestock, and this guide recommends none. ADA, Dennerle, Chihiros and SunGrow tools had no Amazon US listing we found; JBL, Fluval, Vorestic and Liveek tools failed our seller or list-price check.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are some good tools for planting in an aquarium?
Long tweezers. UNS calls straight tweezers “a great choice for general planting” and says curved ones “aid in planting difficult to reach areas”.
Q. Do I need special aquascaping scissors?
Owners differ: an r/PlantedTank owner: “scissors are a waste of money, just use your hands or normal scissors. The tweezers however are pretty good and useful I find any tweezers on amazon decent.” The r/Aquascape reply above finds curved scissors “very useful”.
