Our review of the 10-Gallon Aquarium Heater

Best 10-gallon aquarium heater (Review & Buying Guide)

I have a 10-gallon tank with tropical fish, and I have tested a few of the aquarium heaters in my aquarium.

I measured their performances on various scales, such as ease of installation, accuracy, safety, etc.

Before testing, I’ve made a list of 20 aquarium heaters. After that I went through the specifications, design, and material of construction. Also, read the reviews people made on various platforms.

After all of that, I filtered out some of the heaters and decided to review the rest eleven of them.

But how I did initial screening?

  • I eliminated the product based on bad reviews, specifications, and the manufacturer’s reputation.
  • I did a survey in the fishkeeping community, and take the people’s verdict on various heaters they have used.

I tried my best to get my hands on them whenever I got the chance. I did buy some of them, and I visited my fellow fishkeepers’ houses where they have been using other brands’ heaters.

I’ve been a fishkeeper for over 15 years now, and I’m always looking for new gadgets to make my life easier. One of the more recent things I found was this heater from Hygger, an excellent one.

It’s made of Titanium which makes it very durable and easy to clean.

The Hygger Titanium Aquarium Heater comes with a thermostat controller, which allows you to select the temp from 32℉ to 104℉ – you can set the perfect temperature for your fish with just one click!

The thermometer on top is excellent for more sensitive readings and accuracy of 0.2 degrees plus or minus!

Overall, this product gets my seal of approval because it’s well-made, easy on the wallet, and efficient in heating water quickly. You can read my complete review article on Hygger Titanium Aquarium Heater.

Eheim’s Jager series of aquarium heaters have been around since 2002. Over the years, it has become widely recognized as being among the best available.

The Eheim Jager Aquarium Thermostat Heater is a fully submersible device, so you need to keep it submerged. The 50W heater is 9.5 inches in length which many people think is too large to fit vertically.

However, I had no issue mounting it vertically in my standard 10-gallon aquarium heater having the dimension of 20” L x 10” W x 12” H.

  • Fully submersible
  • Thermo safey control protects against running dry
  • Will automatically turn off when water level dips too low
  • TruTemp dial recalibrates the heater for precise temperature regulation
  • Made of shock resistant and shatter proof glass for fresh or marine water

The heater performs better if it is positioned vertically. But you can install it horizontally as well.

If you put the heater horizontally the temperature dial won’t be easily accessible from the top. You need to wet your hand to calibrate or adjust the temperature setting.

Some also place the heater inclined to keep it under the water. The heater comes with suction cups to hold it in a fixed position. I found it strong enough to keep the heater in place.

TrueTemp Dial of Eheim Jager Heater
“TrueTemp” Dial of Eheim Jager Heater

The thermostat has an automatic safety control to protect against running dry and automatically turns off when the water level dips too low.

However, the heater doesn’t have an overheat protection & heater guard. Also, it is difficult to find a separate heater guard that fits with the heater.

The thermostat on this heater allows you to set it anywhere between 68° F and 86° F (20° C and 30° C).

If the temperature rises above or drops below that range, it will automatically adjust itself so that your fish are never exposed to extremes in temperature.

Eheim Jager Heater Indicator Light
Eheim Jager Heater Indicator Light

The heater features a temperature control dial that manufacturers say is a “TruTemp” dial. It allows a recalibration function.

The dial has two moving parts. One is blue and another one is red. The blue dial sets the temperature of the heater, and the red dial helps you to calibrate.

Suppose you set the heater temperature to 80°F by turning the blue dial. After 24 hours you see that the temperature of the tank remains at 78°F using a thermometer.

Now the red dial comes into action. You can turn the blue dial to 78°F and calibrate the heater. It seems a bit complicated at first, but it isn’t.

wpDataTables encountered an issue trying to display chart. Please edit the chart in the admin area for more details.

I have done that with ease, however, I know a few of the fishkeepers that find it hard to calibrate.

Once you have done proper calibration and set the temperature for your tank, it performs superbly to maintain the temperature with accuracy.

An indicator light lets you know when the heater is on or off. It makes monitoring easy for beginners and also for experienced aquarists.

The glass casing is shatterproof and shock-resistant to protect against accidents.

Positives

  • Precise temperature control
  • Suitable for freshwater & saltwater
  • Shatterproof/shock-resistant
  • Easy to use
  • Dry run sensor
  • Reliable indicator light

Negatives

  • Users’ dissatisfaction with customer service
  • No overheat sensor
  • No heater guard
  • Relatively larger in length.

Few Invaluable Tips for Choosing A Heater:

Selection of heater may get complex sometimes, and it’s very common that you become confused about which one to buy and may ask several times to yourself, is the heater right for my tank?

Over the few years, I’ve seen many asking about aquarium heaters in different fishkeeping forums and Facebook groups.

Here I’ll share some tips and tricks and the kind of checklist you need to fill up to choose an aquarium heater on your own. Find the answers to the questions below, and you’ll be right on the proceedings.

What is the proper water temperature for your tank?

When you’re a beginner, you may wonder what will be the ideal temperature for your tank. Basically, it depends on the type of fish you own or want to keep.

Tropical fish falls in a temperature range of 75-82°F. However, if you have a parasite attack or disease breakout like Ich, you have to treat the fish by increasing the tank temperature up to 86°F. Therefore, you should always keep the provision to raise the tank temperature at that level. So, the correct range will be 75-86 °F.

Coldwater fish do well in temperatures usually between 60°F to 75°F. For them going beyond 80°F is not recommended to treat Ich. So, having cold water fish in the tank, the heater capacity needs to be sufficient to maintain 80°F, if required.

What size heater do I need for a 10-gallon tank?

First, determine how powerful a heater you need—the heater power is measured in watts. Higher the watt, the higher the capacity. A 10W heater is twice as powerful as a 5W heater. What size heater is the correct one for your aquarium depends on:

  • Tank water volume
  • Difference between room temperature and the desired temperature

Here, I’ve been talking about 10-gallon tanks. So, I am taking 10-gallon as the water volume. In general, you need 2.5W to 5W per gallon, but you need to be specific for this instance.

Now, let’s calculate the temperature difference. Consider the lowest room temperature you can have; it may be in winter. So, find to what extent you need to raise the aquarium water temperature from the lowest point. Then multiply that amount with the water volume.

If you require to uplift 5°F, so for a 10-gallon tank, you need a 50W heater. An undersized heater won’t be a reliable option to keep a consistent temperature; moreover, it may quickly damage the heater.

Which type of heater to select for the 10-gallon tank?

Already you know your tank temperature has to be and the wattage required. Now, you need to find a suitable type of heater for 10-gallon tanks.

Heaters are of different types:

  • Submersible: Submersible heaters remain submerged in the water and are usually shutter-proof and shock-resistant. They last longer, are higher in quality and are a bit expensive too.
  • Hang-on-back or immersible: Immersible heaters are mounted on top of the aquarium like a HOB filter. They also remain partially submersed but aren’t entirely waterproof like submersible heaters.
  • Inline heater: Inline heaters are external heaters designed to use inline with a canister filter outlet. Water has to pass through the heating element to get heated up.
  • Heating cable The heating cable is the simplest type of heater. You have to place the coil underneath the substrate, and they are suitable only for freshwater aquariums.

The best types of heaters for small aquariums like a 10-gallon tank are immersible and submersible heaters. Both types usually use a glass tube containing a heating element and thermostat.

The thermostat controls the heater; when it turns on, the heating element inside gets hot; thus, the water surrounding the heater tube also heats up. At preset temperature, the heater also shuts in automatically by thermostatic action.

As stated earlier, submersible types are more reliable and long-lasting; you can choose an immersible one as well. I recommend using a submersible type heater.

Safety features do you have to look for?

The last and most important is the safety features. You don’t want to kill your fish because of a heater malfunction. So, the automatic shut-off option is the mandatory feature you should look for.

Now, find something more for protecting the heater itself, like dry run or low water level shut down. Others are short circuit and reverse polarity protection.

Construction materials also provide safeguards. Usually, heaters are made of traditional glass tubes, which are fragile. At present, some brands like Hygger are making Titanium tube heaters more durable than glass heaters.

Consider the safety features mentioned here; although you may not get all in one, try to find a balanced one regarding price, safeguards, and suitability.
